I host drawing classes occasionally and this one in particular was held in Northern Liberties at the now infamous 3rdWard.
Ordering a cortado then a macchiato and noticing the subtlties between each drink isn’t for every coffee shop and certainly not for many baristas. That isn’t the case at WinWin as you see, my barista served up two perfect examples each! On my coffee shop scale WinWin is a total WIN! But honestly there are so many ways to make these drinks, it’s like a really good bartender knowing about the subtlties.
A cortado is a beverage that consists ofespresso coffee mixed with a small amount of warm milk to reduce the acidity. The wordcortado is the past participle of the Spanish verb cortar (to cut), in the sense of “dilute”. Cortado is a well known drink in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America.
Caffè macchiato is an espresso coffee drink with a small amount of milk, usually foamed. In Italian, macchiato means “stained” or “spotted” so the literal translation of caffè macchiato is “stained coffee”, or coffee with a spot of milk.
And really after reading this I’m still left like… huh? That didn’t explain anything. The point is, find yourself a good coffee shop!
I knew Monika Malczewska from The Flying Saucer, the coffee shop I owned and operated in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia. My cafe was just a few short blocks from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and seemed to fuel the atmosphere. I was able to make an unfamiliar patron feel at home because my coffee was amazing and I helped make a relaxed environment. Monika and I would have enlivening conversations about art and life, which some would find quite controversial.
We may look cool but be reassured this was one hot summer in the ‘City of Brotherly Love.’ I think she owes me an iced coffee..
